It is rare to meet someone truly impressionable. I'm thankful that I met Sibonelo Dumakude. His life's experiences helped shape a beautiful human being who shares his heart with the world the best way he knows how - art. Sibonelo is from South Africa, a country with stark contrasts - urban developed juxtaposed against raw nature, incredible beauty and unforgiving poverty. Even with no worldly riches, the people express an uncanny graciousness and care toward others, but in the midst of the warm-heartedness and humility can lie cruel violence. Over 10 years ago, while working the night shift in a store, Sibonelo was the victim of a robbery. He sustained several gunshot wounds which resulted in a 14-month hospitalization and 11 major surgical procedures. In the face of death, he was given the chance to reflect and start over. When we chatted he spoke as if this misfortune was a gift that illuminated his life and allowed him to rediscover himself through painting. Even before I learned of his background, the paintings spoke to me. They are utterly emotional, and serve as a semblance of his emotional and energetic reconnection with the world the pain and renewed clarity he experienced through his long recovery. The painting that resonated most with me - Eye of the Storm - had a raw earthiness, and a serenity amidst uproar. If I had the economic means to purchase one of his pieces I would do so in a heartbeat. There is something truly special about having a piece of someone in your home and as part of your life, especially someone who has made an impression on you. I'm unbelievable inspired by this person and I'm so thankful I met him.
