I knew this title would get your attention!
According to Fox News, the Giants practice yoga during the pre-season and all season long and have been doing so for 11 years! Gwen Lawrence, a celebrity yoga coach and spokesperson for Gaiam TV, works with the team and says that while many poses benefit all the players, she does specify certain poses depending on a player's position and the demands of that position on his body.
And cornerback, Devin McCourty of the Patriots, loves his 105-degree hot yoga sessions! He enjoyes the increased flexibility that comes with it and the major detox from all that sweating. Hot yoga or Bikram is not for everyone, but those who do enjoy it and do it safely, reap amazing benefits.
And as a great follow-up to my blog entry - Can Yoga Really Wreck Your Body? - a few weeks ago in response to the NYTimes article warning people about the real possibility of injuries from yoga, Boston.com came out with a nice quick piece on how to prevent yoga injuries. Here are 5 mistakes to avoid - and these apply to any type of workout, not just yoga. For more of an explanation, check out the article here:
- Practicing yoga everyday
- Pushing too far too fast
- Not warming up properly
- Not cooling down after workouts
- Taking a yoga class to heal an injury
Let's practice mindfully and safely! See you at the next Om Hop class this Wednesday!
